Cascade Engineering, a leading specialist in concept-to-certification engineering design, is celebrating a milestone for the first in class, Type 26 HMS Glasgow. The ship, which is a BAE Systems Maritime project, is currently being built at the Govan shipyards in Glasgow, and has just celebrated the successful installation of the foremast.

“Working on the foremast for the Type 26 was a fantastic example of Cascade’s end-to-end approach to engineering design projects,” says Ben Barrass, MD at Cascade. “We were able to turn an outline design into a well-proportioned scantling plan of decks, bulkhead panels and reinforcement. This was optimised to pass all structural requirements, at the same time as being weight efficient, which was a critical requirement. Comprehensive, concise documentation was also critical to achieving prompt acceptance from the classification society for the structure.”

HMS Glasgow is the first of eight future City-class Type 26 advanced anti-submarine warfare frigates. The second and third frigates, HMS Cardiff and HMS Belfast, are also under construction at the shipyard. There is growing interest in the Type 26 Global Combat Ship programme both in the UK and internationally, according to BAE Systems. All eight Type 26 frigates will be built on the Clyde, supporting 1,700 jobs in Scotland and 4,000 UK jobs in the supply chain.

“We brought inexperienced team members to work alongside the BAE Systems team, concentrating on critical programme elements with minimal supervision, while following BAE Systems methods and meeting Lloyds Register ad MoD requirements,” says Ben. “This is an excellent demonstration of how our ‘concept to certification’ engineering support can help OEMs deliver outstanding projects on time and on budget.”
