Certification is the outcome. But identifying a robust and efficient process to achieve this is the real additional value behind the outcome. CVEs think about certification early in the design process which is why Cascade clients know they are not just buying a CVE to sign off the end product, but investing in engineering confidence throughout the design process.
When customers approach us to act as Compliance and Verification Engineers (CVEs), they are usually looking for one thing in particular: reassurance.
They want an experienced, independent engineering partner to assess their design, verify compliance and help ensure their project achieves certification without unnecessary delays. It's a role we're increasingly being asked to perform, including recently by several major tier one and two organisations, and one we have the capability and experience to perform.
Those first conversations often lead to a different one
Identifying efficient routes to certification are as much about minimising unnecessary effort as they are about ensuring the verification required has been comprehensively met.
Because while formal certification may happen towards the end of a programme, successful certification begins much earlier.
For many customers, the challenge is rarely just certification itself. It is also avoiding the late design changes, unnecessary activities, unexpected compliance issues and programme delays that can emerge when certification requirements are viewed as an end goal, and not considered throughout the engineering process.
An independent compliance review will identify where evidence already exists, is missing or where further work is needed before certification. But if done too late in the process, resolving those issues can mean redesign, additional testing, manufacturing changes or programme delays. Involving experienced Compliance Engineers earlier allows potential issues to be identified while there is still time to influence the design, helping reduce risk, avoid unnecessary rework and create a smoother path to certification.

In reality, compliance is built into a project from day one. Every design decision, structural change, manufacturing consideration and engineering compromise has the potential to influence the certification journey.
That is why our experience extends well beyond independent verification. At Cascade Engineering, our engineers spend as much time solving complex engineering challenges as they do assessing them. We understand how programmes evolve, how requirements change, where unforeseen issues arise and how seemingly small design decisions can have significant implications later in the project.
When we become involved only at the verification stage, we can certainly identify areas that require attention before certification. We can help customers understand where evidence is missing, where compliance has not been fully demonstrated or where additional engineering work may be required.
However, when we're involved earlier in the programme, we can often help prevent those issues arising in the first place.”
This isn't a new philosophy for us. When we supported the modification of a Pilatus PC-12, our role extended far beyond producing certification evidence. Working alongside the customer's engineering team from the early stages of design, by the time the formal certification effort began, much of the hard work had already been done. The result wasn't simply successful certification, it was a better engineered solution delivered with greater confidence.
In many ways, our role as a CVE is providing confirmation that good engineering decisions have been made throughout the project.
That is why we encourage customers to think about compliance differently, as a continuous thread running through the entire programme. Starting with the end in mind not only makes certification more straightforward, it can also save significant time, cost and complexity along the way.
After all, the C in CVE doesn't stand for certification. It stands for compliance. And compliance is something that should be designed in from the very beginning. In other words, customers aren't buying a CVE.
They're buying engineering judgement.
